May 10 Cardinals 9 Braves 3
After some tough losses to
open the season, the Cardinals finally put
one in the win column. The Cardinals got their first win with a 9 - 3 victory
over the Braves on Saturday. The Cardinals started the scoring in the 2nd inning
with Henry MacDonnell, Alex D’Andrea, Brett Mullet, Tim Shields, Harrison Jumper
and Alexander Gillis banging out consecutive hits after 2 outs to score 4 runs.
Joseph Shields kept the hitting going with a leadoff single in the third. Mac
Donnell followed with his 2nd of 3 hits, but a nice play by the Braves
centerfielder
forced Shields at second. D’Andrea kept it going with his 2nd hit of the
game. After another out again it was Tim Shields, Jumper and Gillis
getting
consecutive hits to plate 2 more runs. Joseph Shields again let off with a hit
in the fourth inning, to be followed with a hit by Mac Donnell. After another
out, Mullet came thru with her second hit scoring Shields. With two outs Jumper
and Gillis again came up with big hits !
to close out the scoring with 2 more runs. The Cardinal Defense was
stellar in
the field. Led by big Danny Polcari, who stopped everything hit his way and
Gillis who had an unassisted put out and a great catch a first base, were able
to hold the high-powered offense of the Braves in check.
The Braves started slow, remaining scoreless through the 2nd. Michael
Barbuti
led off for the Braves in the 3rd with a double. Michael DiFiore followed
with
a double and RBI sending Barbuti across Home Plate for the score. In the
bottom
of the inning, Jonah Crain shined defensively with an unassisted out at 2nd.
In the 4th,
Roger Nadeau stayed focused with a
brilliant tag-out at 3rd to end the bottom of the inning. Carolyn Mahoney
continued to show her steady hand with a single to the pitcher in the 5th and
then sprinted home when Nadeau ripped a double to center. Nadeau continued
his
MVP game by taking the pitcher’s mound in the 5th and teaming with Zach
Strasnick at catcher to keep the fierce Cards offense scoreless in the 5th.
Strasnick showed what a team player he is by staying tough at catcher after
being hit on the leg by a stray pitch. The Braves took one more strike at
the
Card’s lead in the 6th with Crain, Michael Sickler and Barbuti hitting singles
acros!
s the infield. Crain scored but the Card’s lead proved too great.
Tyler Story
debut his golden arm in the 6th, partnering with ace catcher Nick Roth for 2
strike-outs.
